Police investigation
The police investigation is an important part of the criminal justice process.
Learn more about what happens during an investigation and how a crime progresses to the courts.
Reporting a crime
It is your decision to report a crime, but the police always encourage victims of a crime to make a report.
Collecting evidence
It's important that police get as much evidence as possible to support the case if it goes to court.
Making a statement
You may be asked to make a statement to police when you report the crime, or at a later date.
Getting updates on the investigation
During the investigation, you might have questions about how things are progressing.
Laying charges
A ‘charge’ is when a person is charged with a crime and a formal allegation of a particular offence is made.
Bail
Bail is where the accused person is released until the court case starts, but they have to follow certain rules made by the court.
Decision to prosecute
The prosecutor will look at all the evidence and decide if it is strong enough to prove that the accused is guilty of committing the crime.
