Alternative Approaches to Justice: Are Victims Better
Off? This is the challenging question that will be explored by
international and local speakers at the Australasian Society of
Victimology's (ASV) conference on September 27, 2007.
Professor Marc Groenhuijsen, Director of the Intervict (an
International Victimological Research Centre at Tilburg University,
Netherlands) will give a keynote address on international standards
governing the process of mediation and the importance of empirical
research on the effects of restorative justice.
Dr Ian Edwards of East Anglia University, England, will also give a
keynote address on the British programmes to re-intergrate the
victim in the criminal justice process, including restorative
justice.
A panel discussion on restorative justice will follow these
speakers. Afterwards, Professor Grant Devilly of the Brain Research
Centre, Swinburne University, will speak on therapy to help victims
heal as a lead-in to a panel discussion on whether victims are
better off in an adversarial system or an inquisitorial
system.
Panellists include Michael Dawson (Victim Support
Services), Leigh Garrett (OARS), Vanessa Swan
(Yarrow
Place), Dr Zoe
Morrison (Australian Centre for the Study of Sexual
Assault), Katherine McLachlan (Flinders
University) and Grant Thomas (Youth
Court of SA).
